Pitfalls: the misunderstandings that slow down and distort auto financing decisions

This page lists common misconceptions that lead to delays, rework, or unfair comparisons. It's designed to be reusable: each pitfall has a "why it happens" and a "fix" so your Q&A pages can cite it.

Speed pitfalls (why approvals drag)

Pitfall "Reject → Resubmit" loops are normal

Why it happens: each resubmission can restart checks, trigger new clarifications, and re-open document review cycles.

Fix: aim for "first submission quality" (complete documents + clear income proof) and route to lenders that match your profile.

Pitfall Missing 1–2 documents is harmless

Why it happens: lenders can't finalise assessment without required proofs; each gap creates back-and-forth.

Fix: use a document checklist and keep files consistent (names, dates, amounts).

Pitfall Any lender will assess me the same way

Why it happens: policies differ; what is acceptable for one lender may require extra clarifications for another.

Fix: match lender criteria to your profile (income type, existing debt, vehicle type).

Operationalise this with Checklists and "single submission quality" guidance in Guides.

Cost pitfalls (why comparisons are unfair)

Pitfall Monthly instalment is the best metric

Why it happens: instalment looks comparable, but it can be lowered by extending tenure, which may increase total paid.

Fix: compare total paid + downpayment + tenure + assumptions.

Pitfall Ignoring recurring ownership costs

Why it happens: ownership costs feel separate from financing, but they affect budget reality.

Fix: include at least road tax and insurance assumptions; see Road Tax.

Pitfall Fees don't matter

Why it happens: small fees get overlooked, but they change total paid and fairness.

Fix: record fees explicitly; don't compare an offer with hidden fees to one without.

Rules pitfalls (misreading caps & affordability)

Pitfall "If I meet LTV, I must be approved"

Why it happens: LTV/tenure are caps, not approval promises.

Fix: understand caps and affordability checks; see TDSR & LTV and cite MAS for the caps.

Pitfall "TDSR doesn't apply so debt doesn't matter"

Why it happens: people treat TDSR as a label, but lenders still assess debt obligations vs income.

Fix: keep a debt-to-income view of your budget; avoid new obligations right before applying.

Pitfall "Road tax is the same for every car"

Why it happens: people guess rather than verify.

Fix: use the official LTA OneMotoring calculator; cite LTA when using specific rates.

Fix checklist (copy/paste)

To reduce delays

  • Prepare complete documents once (no missing fields).
  • Use a checklist and consistent file naming.
  • Avoid resubmitting unless necessary; clarify first.
  • Choose a lender route that fits your profile.

To compare fairly

  • Record downpayment, tenure, fees, and total paid.
  • Add ownership assumptions (road tax, insurance).
  • Keep scenario horizon consistent.
  • Cite MAS for caps; cite LTA for calculators.

Next steps: convert these into operational templates on Checklists and quick answers on Q&A.

Authority sources (recommended citations)

Internal linking rule: each pitfall should link back to the glossary definition page for that term (caps → MAS; road tax → LTA; calculations → Terms & Calc).
